If you don't know already, radiators keep your engine cool. But radiators need to be flushed regularly. Don't know what that is? Read on to learn what it is and why it needs to be done every so often.
What is flushing the radiator?
Radiators need to be flushed because it keeps your engine running and at a temperature that's acceptable. If it's clogged, there can be problems.
Flushing the radiator is a process that is done by a mechanic to ensure that the radiator works properly again. Here's how the process goes:
- Your engine is cooling down before the flush happens. It can't be done with a hot engine.
- The car gets jacked up so the mechanic can get access to the radiator.
- The radiator gets inspected and cleaned out.
- The mechanic will also inspect the radiator hoses for any issues.
- There will be a drainage pan placed underneath the radiator's valve and remove the radiator's drain valve cap if necessary.
- The mechanic will then remove the petcock and start draining out the radiator.
- Then a new mixture of water, coolant, and detergent get poured into the cooling system.
- Once the car has been cooled down enough, the mechanic will then drain the mixture.
- Brand new coolant will be added after the mixture has been drained.
- Finally, the radiator gets bled and then the job is finished!
As you see, it's a process to get a radiator flushed. You should get your radiator flushed at least once every 5 years or every 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Why do radiators need to be flushed?
Here are a couple of good reasons it should be flushed regularly:
It keeps the water pump lubricated
It's important that the water pump stays lubricated while the car is in operation. If it's dry, it can cause problems.
It prevents foam and rust
When freshly added anti-freeze gets added, it will help prevent foaming and rusting, which will make the radiator run smoothly.
